Shongom, Lallapido, Jauro Saje Filya, Gonde and Gundari in Shongom local government area of Gombe have been light up after sleeping in darkness for nine years.
The four communities had their source of power damaged in 2015 and were thrown into total darkness until recently the power was restored.
Speaking with Correspondents' Watch, the Chairperson of Shongom council, Fatima Binta Bello said that she became disturbed when she was elected into office. Binta said said that one of her pioneer projects in the area was the rural electrification in the communities.
"When we came on board five years ago, I wondered how people stayed for nine years without electricity. We brainstormed on how to use our lean resources at our disposal to alleviate the sufferings of people of the area.
“This led to the decision to start saving money and when we get some reasonable amount, we embarked on the rural electrification rehabilitation project to restore electricity to long-neglected areas,” she said.
Bello said she has assisted 300 people who were affected by flood during the rainy season. The Council boss pledged to deliver other projects while investing in welfare of the communities.
“We have spent over N25 million on the project and we have started the second phase,” she said.
Also, Commissioner for Local Government, Alh. Abdukardir Muhammad comnended the Chairperson for executing people oriented projects which aligned with the administration of Governor Muhammad Inuwa Yahaya.
He said he visited Shongom to inspect the projects of the local government jointly done by the state government, saying that Bello has done alot to her people.
The commissioner urged Bello and the community to cooperate and maintain peace in the area.
