The Bauchi State Government has said that it prosecuted 80 persons on crimes bothering on sexual and gender based violence (SGBV).
The Chairperson, State Action Committee on SGBV, also the Wife of the Governor, Aisha Bala Mohammed yesterday said the committee has secured over 80 convictions for culprits that were associated with such crimes in the State to serve as a deterrent to others.
According to her, some of the cases, especially the sexual ones, were so disturbing. “We had a case of a father impregnating his biological daughter twice. It beats all sense of reasoning about how some human beings have turned to monsters,” she queried.
“The rapes within the family circles are also another cankerworm that societies are being faced with. The victims of such rapes are not the girls alone, the boys also fall victims too,” she added.
The Governor’s wife said that the Committee was able to resolve minor issues –particularly on domestic disagreement.
“We resolve such minor issues through empowering the couples to support their families, with a stern warning to the husbands to live up to their responsibilities as heads of their households.”
She added that the Committee provided shelter, psycho-social support and accelerated medical care to victims of SGBV to reintegrate them back into the society to continue with their normal life.
She attributed moral decadence to such acts which transformed into social norms and values at the family level and society. "We have also identified illiteracy in both conventional and religious teachings as another factor that triggers some of the crimes associated with SGBV.”
“The media should always be engaged when such cases come up for hearing in courts. By giving such cases visibility, in my opinion, it would serve the dual purpose of shaming the culprits and bringing some kind of foreclosure and succour to victims. It also serves as deterrent to others.”
