North East schools converge on Bauchi for NEDC sports 2024 tournament

Secondary schools across the six North East region have converged on Bauchi for the North East Development Commission 2024 Sport tournament. 

The game which is held at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Stadium, tagged “Secondary school sports competition” was organised to promote peace, unity and regional integration anchored by the Commission. 

At the keenly contested football match on Tuesday, Adamawa team defeated Yobe in a penalty shootout after a draw of 1-1 during the 90 minutes. The teams proceeded to penalties where Adamawa scored 5 goals and Yobe got 4 goals. 

In the second match, Team Bauchi beat Borno with one goal. 

The tournament which will end on Friday is featuring; football, basketball, lawn tennis, athletics and table tennis. 

According to NEDC, the tournament was organised to promote unity peace and regional integration. “Purpose of the programme is to organise competitions where talents can be discovered and nurtured in conjunction with established institutions, providing youths with local and international opportunities to engage in professional sporting careers for enhanced income.

“This can be achieved through the following two-pronged approach: organising sporting competitions across the region and identification of talents through systematic documentation of recorded accomplishments; developing the capacity of games masters in schools and enrolment of competent youth in sports academies for further development.”

Also, the state commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Mohammed Salis Gamawa who graced the occasion, commended the Commission for organising the event, and appealed to it to facilitate the realisation of a zonal sports academy in Bauchi, which the state government has for some time now been yearning.
