The Bauchi State Government has on Tuesday inaugurated a medical oxygen plant and Newborn Care Unit jointly donated by the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and Canada IHS at the General Hospital, Azare.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Governor Bala Mohammed, represented by his deputy Auwal Jatau said that medical oxygen is a vital component in healthcare, essential for the treatment of various ailments, particularly respiratory illnesses, and key in addressing life- threatening maternal and newborn emergencies.

Mohammed said such partnership illuminates the path towards sustainable development and enhanced healthcare services. “It is in times like this that support is required from our partners knowing the realities of the current global economic predicaments, particularly developing nations like Nigeria,” he said.

Also, the UNICEF Nigeria Country Representative, Christian Munduate explained that the installation of the medical oxygen plant would ensure that
critical life-saving intervention, particularly for newborns and children suffering from pneumonia and other respiratory illnesses can be treated.

Munduate said that the plant is a beacon of innovation and resilience, promising to save countless lives and provide a model for similar initiatives across the country.

“Additionally, the Level 2 Newborn Unit established here at General Hospital Azare is equipped with state-of-the-art
facilities. This unit will significantly reduce neonatal mortality rates and improve health outcomes for our youngest and most vulnerable population.”

The Commissioner for Health, Sani Dambam warned against misuse of the facility while applauding the donors for the life-saving project. Dambam said that the oxygen plant is the third in the entire state while two others are expected to be done soon.
