Sayawa Chiefdom: Group rejects Tafawa Balewa as proposed headquarters

By Ahmad Saka

The Tafawa Balewa Town Development Association (TABTODA) has rejected the position of the Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed to site the headquarters of the proposed Sayawa Chiefdom in Tafawa Balewa town.

Governor Mohammed last week received the report of the Committee of the creation of Sayawa Chiefdom and promised to site the throne in Tafawa Balewa town.

The Secretary of the Association, Yunusa Ado at press conference made the stance know on Monday in Bauchi. He said for a long time they had conceded to the creation of the Sayawa Chiefdom if that would bring lasting peace to the area.

“We also made it categorically clear that we would never accept inclusion of Tafawa Balewa town in the domain of the Chiefdom not to talk of siting its headquarters there.

"This view was severally communicated to His Excellency, Governor Bala Muhammad in different ways and by different and various well respected persons and groups,” he said.

Yunusa explained that Tafawa Balewa town was founded by Fulani which means ‘black stone’ in Fulani language “and all villages and settlements in Tafawa Balewa are not Sayawa villages, how can they pay allegiance to Sayawa Chiefdom?"

He said all the commissions of enquiries set up that investigated Tafawa crises reported that Tafawa Balewa is not a Sayawa town and they recommended for the creation of Sayawa Chiefdom in Bogoro local Government area.

Yunusa alleged that the recent fact finding committee set up by the government is one sided because it didn't carry all stakeholders from Tafawa Balewa along. “It was created clandestinely."

He called on the Governor not to disregard all reasonable and sensible advice given to him, saying it is unjust for the government to carry on with its decision.

He said that the reason the displaced person didn't return to Tafawa is government interventions by mounting security personnel to ensure peace. “If the government can withdraw all the security operatives, we will go and take over our land.”
