The Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU) in Bauchi state has inducted 54 graduating medical doctors of the school into the Medicine and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN).

Speaking during the induction ceremony on Thursday, Prof. Ibrahim Garba, the Vice Chancellor of the institution said that this is the second induction ceremony of the institution for the graduating medical doctors.

Represented by Prof. Sani Kunya, Deputy Vice Chancellor, Academics, Garba commended the cumulative efforts of both the Bauchi state government, the Governing Council of the University and other stakeholders.

He said the efforts were the reason for the establishment of the College of Medical Sciences which has seen two sets getting inducted by MDCN.

Also, Prof. Sambo Zailani, the Provost, College of Medical Sciences, ATBU, explained that the Cardinal function of the College is to train medical graduates and to also be involved in research and render clinical services to the community.

“The curriculum is designed to graduate medical doctors of international standard, with in-depth and vast knowledge of current state of medicine particularly in the tropics.

“When fully established, the college plans to offer full training in Dentistry, Allied medical professions, and Biomedical Engineering and Prosthesis.

“The induction Ceremony taking place today is a solemn tradition that had its roots in antiquity, right from the era of Hippocrates 380-450 BC.

“It is a mandatory rite of passage for every young graduate of medicine,” he said.

In her address, Dr Fatima Kyari, the Registrar, MDCN informed the doctors that they were not celebrating an arrival to their destination, but a commencement of the journey into their medical practice.

Represented by Dr. Tijani Mandaka, Asst. Registrar, MDCN, Kyari said that the Council would register them after the induction ceremony and provide them with the Provisional Registration (PR).

She urged them to lower their pride in order to learn more and gather more experiences from their senior colleagues in the field.

Also speaking, Dr Umar Ibrahim, Guest Speaker at the ceremony, urged the young doctors to respect human dignity and rights of their patients.

He called on them to always uphold professionalism and honesty and urged them to maintain a high level of professionalism.
