IGP charges officers on professionalism, integrity

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun has charged the newly recruited police constables to exhibit high levels of professionalism and integrity in the line of duty.

Egbetokun made the charge in Bauchi on Thursday, during the graduation ceremony and passing out parade of 212 recruited police constables from Bauchi and Gombe state.

Represented by Auwal Mohammad, the Commissioner of Police in the state, the IGP charged them to also adhere strictly to the rule of law and established procedures.

“Your role demands empathy and compassion towards the civilian population, particularly the vulnerable, while maintaining firmness and
fairness in all interactions.

“Strive to be perceived as a friend
and partner to the public, inspiring hope and confidence in the
security apparatus.

“Remember that the uniform you wear and
the office you hold, are symbols of trust and responsibility, never to be exploited for intimidation, harassment, or
perversion of justice.

“Abhor all forms of lawlessness, human
rights abuse, and unprofessional conduct. Instead, utilize your
authority to protect citizens, enforce laws, and apprehend
criminals,” he advised.

According to him, 10,000 newly recruited police constables were graduating today, an event, he said, was taking place concurrently at four premier colleges and 12 Police Training Schools nationwide.

He said that the police force has instilled in them the necessary orientation to effectively address the complex security challenges facing the nation, while adhering to the principles of the law.

Egbetokun added that this feat demonstrated the federal government's
commitment to strengthening the Nigeria Police Force by addressing the longstanding manpower deficit.

He said in pursuant of the community Policing principle of the current police administration, a significant number of the newly graduated police constables have been posted to their states of origin.

Earlier, DIG Hamisu Argumgun (Rtd), the Chairman, Police Service Commission, said that the Commission will continue to support them and ensure that their career progression will be predictable within the requirements of established rules and regulations.

Represented by Ahmed Aliyu, Director, Procurement, Police Service Commission, Argungu reminded them that the nation is still facing some security challenges like banditry, kidnapping, armed robbery and terrorism amongst others.

He however, said that President Bola Tinubu has given a listening ear to requests for manpower improvement and provision of needed logististical support.

“I charge you to go out and reciprocate the government's good gesture and strive to work in partnership with other security agencies to eliminate or reduce the security challenges bedevilling our beloved nation,” he said.
