More than 7,500 members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Bauchi State have defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Yakubu Dogara's Constituency of Dass local government.
The defectors include the Deputy Chairman of APC in Dass, Yunusa Umar and two other executive members, claiming that ruling PDP’s achievements attracted them.
The APC Youth Leader, Yusuf Inuwa Bora and Welfare Secretary, Isah Zakaria alongside joined PDP and were welcomed in Dass on Sunday by the PDP Chairman in the area, Hon Yusuf Sabo and the Executive Chairman, Dass LGA, Mohammed Abubakar Jibo.
Giving reasons for their defection, Umar said their decision to defect to the ruling PDP in the state is as a result of the performance of the state Governor, Bala Mohammed. "Governor Bala Mohammed's people-oriented programmes and policies since he became governor of our state really convinced us to defect to PDP. We are politicians and the interests of our supporters are of paramount importance to us.
"We're convinced that the PDP truly cares for our people's welfare. As such, we don't have to hesitate any longer to join PDP in the interest of our people,” he said.
He pledged to work hard to support PDP in the next general election and contribute their quotas for the development of the party in the state.
Dass is one of the three local government areas where the former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara represented for four terms. He is known to be one of the prominent politicians from the area.
The Chairman of Dass local government assured the defectors of fair treatment, saying that their defection from APC was a welcome development.
