The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has opposed the north east planned protest on the deplorable state of roads in the region but called on the federal government to take immediate action to repair the dilapidated roads, particularly the Numan-Yola-Gombe highway.
This appeal comes after the association noted that the poor state of roads in the region has claimed several lives, including those of students.
Mu'azu Hina, National Vice President of NANS, who addressed a press conference on Friday in Gombe emphasised that the rehabilitation of these roads is a matter of life and death, and not a partisan issue.
He urged the federal government to provide adequate funding for road maintenance to ensure the safety of students and other road users.
In a separate development, NANS has disassociated itself from the planned protest by the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) against the recent hike in voice calls and data plan prices.
According to Hina, NANS is committed to advocating for the welfare and interests of Nigerian students, and therefore cannot participate in a protest that may not directly benefit its members.
The association expressed concerns that the NLC protest may not be well-thought-out and may not achieve its intended objectives.
