The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Bauchi state council has called on all the journalists in the state to consider national interest and adopt solution journalism to promote good governance, transparency and accountability in any administration.
Comrade Umar Sa’idu, the Chairman, NUJ, Bauchi state chapter, made the call in Alkaleri Local Government Area on Thursday during a two-day capacity building training organised by the Correspondents' chapel.
He also charged the journalists in the state to adhere to a decent dress code and uphold the ethics of the profession.
“I want to use this opportunity to advise my professional colleagues in the state to always adhere to the provision of the NUJ constitution especially in the way we report, the way we dress and the way we conduct ourselves during assignments.
“We should try as much as possible to always consider national interest and adopt solution journalism as the first option toward promoting good governance, transparency and accountability in any administration.
“The Bauchi state council of NUJ is ever ready to continue supporting chapels to organise useful programmes such as training of members to update their knowledge, understand media management and its sustainability,” he said.
The Chairman commended the foresight of the Correspondents' chapel’s leadership for organising the training.
In his keynote address, Mr Mukhtar Gidado, the Special Adviser to the state governor on Media and Publicity, said that the theme of the training was apt considering the transfirmation in the media industry due to technology.
He encouraged the participants to be instrumental in projecting issues in the state for the government to address the needs of the people.
“Another emerging trend is the shift toward journalists becoming personal brands.
“With social media platforms providing direct access to audiences, journalists are no longer just reporters, they are influencers and thought leaders,” he said.
While appreciating the support of journalists in the state, Mr Ahmed Mohammed, Chairman, Bauchi state Correspondents' chapel of NUJ said that the two days capacity training was in line with human capital development for better productivity.
Also, Mr Andee Iheme, a resource person that spoke on Artificial Intelligence and Investigating reporting, charged journalists to verify and fact check all information to abort all forms of litigation and risks in discharging their duties.
Iheme also dwelled on research and use of technology to be abreast with global issues as reliable sources of news for the general public.
The two-day workshop organised for the Correspondents' chapel in the state was with the theme ‘Emerging Trends in Journalism: The Impacts on Modern Journalism, Practitioners’.
