Students of the Faculty of Engineering and Engineering Technology at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), Bauchi, on Tuesday engaged in a Hackathon and Pitching Competition to promote Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The competition was organized by the Nigerian University Engineering Students Association (NUESA), ATBU chapter in collaboration with the Royal Academy of Engineering, RAEng-HEPSSA, Spoke University Project Office, FEET, ATBU, Bauchi.
While declaring the competition open, the Dean of the Faculty, Prof. A.D. Ibrahim Suleiman declared that he is deeply committed to fostering an environment where innovation thrives, and the students are empowered to tackle real-world challenges.
The Dean stated that, "It is with immense pride and enthusiasm that I stand before you today. Having witnessed the inspiring welcome addresses and the insightful overview of this hackathon's objectives, I am truly excited about the potential of this event."
According to him, "This Engineering Hackathon & Pitching Competition, themed "Hacking for Global Goals and Innovating for Impact," which is strongly geared towards scientific and technological advancement and perfectly aligns with the Great Balewite's (ATBU) vision, and mission of providing quality education that prepares students for the real-world."
He stressed that, "The theme itself, commemorating World Engineering Day 2025, underscores the critical role Engineers play in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals. The projects you will be developing here today have the potential to make a tangible difference in our communities and beyond.
"I commend the Nigerian University Engineering Student Association, the RAEng-HEPSSA Spoke University Project Office, and everyone involved in organizing this remarkable event. Your dedication to fostering engineering excellence is truly commendable," he added.
He stressed that, "To our students, I encourage you to embrace this opportunity with passion and determination. Let your creativity flourish, and let your problem-solving skills shine. Remember, this is a platform to showcase your university and for you to learn, collaborate, and innovate."
The Outgoing Dean added that,"We are confident that the solutions you develop will not only showcase your talent but also contribute to a more sustainable and prosperous future. Therefore, with great pleasure and anticipation, I now officially declare the Engineering Hackathon & Pitching Competition open! Let the hacking and innovating begin."
In his welcome address, Sani Baba, President, Nigerian University Engineering Student Association (ATBU, Chapter) stated that,"Today marks a significant milestone in our collective journey towards innovation and impact. As we commemorate the 2025 World Engineering Day."
He stressed that, "We are gathered here under the inspiring theme: "Hacking for Global Goals and Innovating for Impact." This theme resonates deeply with our commitment to leveraging engineering ingenuity to address the pressing challenges facing our world, as outlined by the Sustainable Development Goals."
According to him, "This event is not just a competition; it is a platform for us, as aspiring engineers, to showcase our creativity, problem-solving skills, and dedication to making a positive difference."
Sani Baba added that, "We are here to transform ideas into tangible solutions, to push the boundaries of what is possible, and to demonstrate the power of collaborative innovation."
He extended gratitude to the Dean, Faculty of Engineering and Engineering Technology, and the RAEng-HEPSSA Spoke University Project Office, for their invaluable partnership and support in making the event a reality.
He stressed that,"Their commitment to fostering engineering excellence is truly commendable. To our esteemed judges and mentors, thank you for dedicating your time and expertise to guide and evaluate our participants. Your insights and feedback will be instrumental in shaping the future of these young innovators."
"And to every participant, I commend your enthusiasm and dedication. You are the future of engineering in Nigeria, and I am confident that your projects will inspire us all. Let us embrace this opportunity to learn, collaborate, and innovate. Let us work together to create solutions that will have a lasting impact on our communities and the world at large," he concluded.
