Leadtots, WCY task journalists on sexual, reproductive health education among adolescent girls

Women, Child, Youths Health and Education Initiative (WCY) and LEADTOTS Development Initiative, have called on journalists in Bauchi State to promote issues relating to sexual reproductive health in the State to bring the needed change as stated in goal 3 of the SDGs which is to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all. 

The journalists were charged to amplify the messages, educate and inform as well as inspire action through their reports on sexual and reproductive health issues concerning adolescent girls and young women.

The groups made the call on Wednesday during a one-day Media Engagement to promote sexual reproductive health in Bauchi State, held at the Conference Hall of the Bauchi State NUJ, was organised by Women, Child, Youths Health and Education Initiative (WCY) and LEADTOTS Development Initiative, with funding by from Global Affairs Canada through PLAN International Nigeria.

During his presentation, Kamal Bello of the WCY, stated that the aim of the project is to improve access to sexual and reproductive health education for adolescent girls, young women and vulnerable groups in Bauchi State.

Also, highlighted some of the activities of the organisation, which include, strengthening sick-bays in schools, providing pad banks for formal and non-formal schools, establishing
disposable pad incubation centers in the three senatorial zones of the State.

Others were, strengthening learning centers for pregnant adolescents and young women, free medical services for indigent adolescents among many others.

He however commended the State Government for considering
the violence against person’s prohibition VAPP law and child protection law.

In his remarks, the Executive Director, LEADTOTS Development Initiative, Nicholas Oshojah Afeso, said that the media engagement was aimed to bring lasting solutions to the problems affecting adolescent girls on sexual and reproductive health in schools and communities.

He noted that, media plays a critical role in shaping public perception and influencing policy decisions, adding that without media they cannot achieve the desired objectives.

The theme of the engagement 'Amplify the message, educate, inform and inspire action on sexual and reproductive health’ is in line with the aspirations 6 of the African Development Goals which hopes for an Africa whose development is people-driven, relying on the potential of African people, especially its women and youth.
